The LWVBC 2025 Positions For Action meetings were virtually on Sunday, February 9th and Thursday, February 13th.  There were 26 members in attendance, not counting members at both meetings twice.

Proportional representation (PR) educational and legislative efforts continue apace. The only PR method currently allowed in CO statute is Single Transferable Vote (STV), aka Proportional Ranked Choice Voting (pRCV).

The post-election headlines are making much ado about the failure to adopt Instant-Runoff (ranked) Voting in Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Arizona. In all but Oregon, the reform was paired with a choose-one all-candidate primary open to all voters, modeled after Alaska’s Final-4 Voting. (Alaska voters narrowly – by 664 votes – retained Final-4 Voting.) Voters also rejected primary election reforms in Montana and South Dakota and banned ranked voting in Missouri.

They recently held elections revolving around a new voting method. The ballot contests and results were quite different, but the campaigning had some similarities.

In our previous article, we highlighted the misleading nature of reporting multi-winner city council contests, and advocated for a shift to presenting a candidate’s support as a percentage of ballots rather than a percentage of votes. Continuing this discussion, we delve deeper into how our current reporting approach can hide serious ballot design flaws, which can be responsible for changing the outcomes of elections!
