Mary Ann Wilner:
Concerned about campaign finance
published online 11/02/2017
The League of Women Voters of Boulder County (LWVBC) is grateful to the local press for
focusing on the appearance of big money in local politics, including Boulder. Longmont and Broomfield. The LWVBC takes particular interest in campaign finance regulations, in part because the league participated in the initial effort to publicly finance city of Boulder elections. The league believes that sound, enforceable election laws make for a vital and effective democracy.
Regarding Boulder specifically, although the city attorney found no probable cause for investigation into a recent complaint, we have serious concerns about the difference between the letter and the spirit of the law. We hope that, working together, the community can accomplish changes to the law that ensure citizens have confidence in the city's campaign finance regulations going forward.
In the meantime, we voters must recognize that avalanches of brochures and yard signs are not the best way to make our choices. One source of information on candidates and issues is the league's collection of election information at: http://vote411.org
You can also find election information at the LVVVBC website. including videos of most candidate forums: lwv'bc.org. Information on election finances is available on each city's website. For example, the city of Boulder's website is http://ouldercolorado.gov/elections
Get informed and then vote.
