President's Letter
 for June 2021

By Elizabeth Crowe

Annual Meeting Recap!

With the closing of the Annual Meeting in May, another League year is nearly complete. Thanks to everyone who participated in the meeting! I continue to be inspired by all of you – our members, our partners – who so passionately believe in the power of a democratic process that can work for all people.

Our LWVBC Secretary, Molly Saunders, is working to finalize the detailed Annual Meeting minutes. In the meantime, I’m pleased to report that members voted to approve our 2021-22 budget and bylaws change regarding Team leadership and meeting requirements (see below for details). Members also voted in a new leadership slate, and we honored and celebrated key community and elected official partners and members (see Debby Vink’s Membership article below).

While LWVBC members affirmed our 2021-22 Program at a special meeting in February 2021, we  Annual Meeting conveners failed to call the Program to a vote at the Annual Meeting. Whoops!  Thanks to Deborah Hayes and Louisa Young for catching the misstep. Please watch your email for a link to a poll so we can take an online vote for this step in League process.

Also at the Annual Meeting, we heard from Anne Bryan, Fund Development, who reminded us how important it is for League to continue establishing a “culture of giving”, and the many opportunities we have to contribute not only our time and talents, but also our dollars to ensure we continue to have positive impact in our community. Just one example of this giving-culture in practice, is that we raised more than $500 in suggested donations for the Annual Meeting…which came with a chance to win some nice door prizes. Every little bit helps, and thanks to all who contributed.
If you were not able to catch the Annual Meeting on May 15, the video is here

LWV Colorado Convention took place on May 21-22 and seven LWVBC members served as delegates to that meeting: myself, Susan Saunders, Molly Saunders, Gaythia Weis, Mary Anne Davitt, Hannah Rain Crowe and Lydia Linke. Others from LWVBC joined the meeting as non-delegate participants. The LWVCO budget and leadership slate passed, as well as a bylaws change. Please join the June 26 Membership Coffee to hear a report on these decisions and other elements of the state Convention.

It is common for several Teams to take a summer break in June/July. This is the case for the Money in Politics Team, and the Social Policy Team is putting its meetings on hold as well. However, for other Teams like Voter Service, it’s time to ramp-up our activities…including summer voter registration drives which can take place in-person again! If you are interested in helping out, attend a voter registration drive training.  Please register here.  If all of the slots are
full, please email mandy at mandynuku@lwvbc.org to be on a list for a future training.

The Voter newsletter also takes a break for the month of July. Please keep checking your emails, mailbox and the lwvbc.org website events calendar for upcoming events, advocacy, volunteer and leadership opportunities. In the meantime, have a safe, healthy summer and thanks for all you to keep League relevant, resilient and ready to act!

VOTE411 Team Needs Your Input
By Carol Brown

VOTE411.org is a one-stop-shop for election-related information. It provides nonpartisan information to voters nationwide. A voter can register to vote, find candidate information and much more.

LWVBC VOTE411 Team is responsible for composing three to four relevant, unbiased questions for candidates running for all elections in Boulder County including county-wide, regional and local municipality elections. The questions are sent to the candidates with instructions on how to post their answers to VOTE411 along with their personal information. The candidate information with question answers is made available to the public on VOTE411.org a month before election day.

We would like your help understanding the issues affecting your municipality or locality so that our questions can be relevant to each of our communities.

If you would like to help the Vote411 team to understand the issues in your community, please email Carol Brown at csbrown190@gmail.com. Please include your name, community and how you would like to be contacted. Your participation can be via email, phone or any way that is convenient for you. If you would like more information about the VOTE411 Team and our work, please include that in your email.

Thanks for your consideration.

Welcome to Jean McGuire, our 2021-22 Membership Director

Jean McGuire transferred to our League two years ago when she moved to the foothills of Boulder County from Estes Park where she had been an active League member there, as well as with the State League.  We are very fortunate to have such a capable leader as Membership Director.  Jean is as passionate about the League as she is camping, which is saying a lot.

LWVBC Voter Service Needs You!

by Mandy Nuku

Would you like to help fulfill our mission of educating and empowering voters? We are looking to fill two positions--Voter Registration Drive Coordinator and Ballot Issue Coordinator for the 2021 Election Season (and beyond if interested!). Review the descriptions of each position below and contact LWVBC Operations Director, Mandy Nuku (mandynuku@lwvbc.org) with any questions or to express your interest in one of the roles.

Voter Registration Drive (VRD) Coordinator
This is an unpaid, volunteer position requiring a time commitment of 2 to 4 hrs. per week, depending on the time of year.  The VRD Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating VRD Training,  scheduling VRDs throughout Boulder County in 2021, posting upcoming VRDs for trained volunteer participation, and working with VRD Volunteers.  The ability to remain non-partisan in public communications is essential.  The VRD Coordinator must be a LWVBC member, have VRD experience and the ability to organize, train and lead a team of volunteers.  The VRD Coordinator will work closely with the LWVBC Operations Director.  The successful candidate must have excellent organizational and communication skills and a passion for registering and educating voters.   Training for this position will be provided.  Letters expressing interest in the position and detailing relevant experience should be emailed to mandynuku@lwvbc.org by June 11.

Ballot Issue Coordinator
  • Orders State ballot issue pamphlets from LWVCO, coordinates use of sponsor logos, and arranges for distribution in County
  • Coordinates: research, writing and editing of local ballot issue pamphlets; formatting of pamphlets for printing; printing; and distribution in the County
  • Arranges with Treasurer for expense reimbursement from LWVCO if appropriate
  • Identifies/recruits LWVBC members to speak at various community meetings about state or local ballot issues (usually the pamphlet researchers)
  • Maintains a calendar of speakers’ events so that conflicts are avoided and that no one particular speaker is over-worked. The assigned speaker is responsible for all future communication with the assigned group
  • Confirms the speakers are supplied with an adequate number of ballot issue pamphlets and other supplies for each presentation

Gun Safety in Colorado
by Sylvia Bernstein
Action and Advocacy Chair
Gun Safety Team Leader

Just over two months ago the LWVBC formed a Gun Safety Issue team in the wake of the March 22 mass shooting at the King Soopers in Boulder. This team has been meeting weekly in order to decide how we can most effectively advocate for enhanced gun safety legislation during the waning weeks of the 2021 legislative session, and strategize about the future.  We started by reaching out to the local Moms Demand Action chapters, as well as the local chapter of the NAACP, Zonta, and the Women’s Collaborative.  We also reached out to most of our Boulder County legislators to encourage the introduction of new gun safety bills that might have prevented the King Soopers tragedy.

Boulder County Pride Motorcades

Want to represent LWVBC in the Boulder County Pride Motorcade in Lafayette or Boulder? Boulder County Pride Motorcades take place on Sunday, June 13th! We need to register ASAP before spaces fill up. There will be 3 motorcades throughout the day with the first in Longmont, the second in Boulder, and the third in Lafayette. We would love to have you join us, whether it be just for one or for all three. Members of the public can join for free, while businesses and non-profits can join for a small fee (the fee will be covered by LWVBC).

The Longmont Motorcade will kick off at 9:00 AM, Boulder will kick off at 1:00 PM, and Lafayette will kick off at 4:00 PM. If interested in participating, please contact Elizabeth Crowe at elizabethcrowe@lwvbc.org, and then fill out this form: http://bit.ly/boco-motorcades
